HAVANA.- Delegates from several countries witnessed the success of a UNIDO-supported Project to process urban solid waste from homes in Cuba’s capital city funded by the Government of Switzerland and conducted by the City´s provincial government and its Department of Community Services and the Hygiene Unit.
The basic step is the selective recovery of home solid organic waste and its processing for producing compost –natural fertilizer—and the generation of clean energy.
At a two-day seminar held at Havana’s Chateau Miramar Hotel, the delegates learned of the technical aspects of this Project, the only one of its kind in Cuba. Besides the recovery of the home waste, the project created an up-to-date laboratory, a plant of the industrial production of compost, a plant for generating biogas from the compost and a generator for the production of clean electricity.
Personnel training for this complex project was prioritized by the organizers.
Delegates from Nicaragua and México, along with Cuban delegates from several Government institutions, high UNIDO officials and diplomats from the Swiss Embassy fully examined all the facets of this complex project.
Their visits to the project’s installations allowed them to learn of the economic and environmental benefits of processing home organic solid waste in this nature-friendly manner.
The project organized the selective recovery of urban solid waste in an area of Havana´s Playa district. Large community containers were placed in every block, emptied by special trucks and transported to the processing center.
The project also supported the updating of Havana’s refuse dumps, some of which were modernized to rationally process waste.
The delegates were fully informed by the project’s managers and other officials of the Havana provincial administration, in charge of managing the project, and from UNIDO Officer in Cuba, the engineer Florentino Chacon.
Foreign experts attending the seminar voiced their interest in replicating this succesful Cuban experience in their respective nations.
They also voiced their gratitude to the Cuban authorities and UNIDO for allowing them the opportunity of learning of these methods for producing clear energy and organic fertilizer for agriculture, all of these through methods friendly to nature.
On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, official counterpart of this Swiss/UNIDO project, Ms. Dolores Marrero underlined its economic and environmental advantages and voiced Cuba’s gratitude to all those who made it possible.
The technical installations of the project were inspected by UNIDO’s Director General, Mr. KIandeh Yumhella (Sierra Leone) during an official visit to Cuba on 18-22 July, 2009. He was received by top Cuban officials and Representatives of UN institutions in the Island, headed by UN Resident Coordinator a.i. and FAO Representative, Mr. Marcio Porto.
Accompanied by Swiss Ambassador Peter Burkhard and high officials of the Cuban and Havana provincial governments, Mr. Kandeh Yumkella congratulated the project´s technicians and operators, and noted that it is one of the most successful ever supported by UNIDO in the Americas.
